Bhutan’s Ultimate Himalayan Expedition
Paro · Punakha · Bumthang · Laya · Lunana · Gasa · Thimphu
For generations, communities in these highlands have lived according to rhythms shaped by livestock, seasonal migration, Buddhist tradition and the demands of the mountain environment. Their villages offer some of the journey’s most meaningful encounters, appearing between immense stretches of wilderness where snow peaks, alpine meadows and glacial valleys dominate the horizon.
This privately supported twenty-eight-day expedition begins more gently among Bhutan’s cultural valleys. Paro, Punakha and Bumthang provide time to discover the kingdom’s spiritual heritage and prepare for the journey ahead before roads gradually disappear and the expedition enters the high Himalayas.
From there, the Snowman Trek becomes something entirely different.

Paro introduces the kingdom through ancient temples and the pilgrimage trail to Tiger’s Nest. Punakha reveals a warmer landscape of rivers, cultivated fields and one of Bhutan’s greatest fortresses.
Beyond lies Bumthang, where monasteries and sacred sites occupy valleys regarded as part of Bhutan’s spiritual heartland.
Together, these places provide the cultural and physical preparation for the wilderness ahead.
Himalayan peaks rise beyond the aircraft windows before the green valley appears between forest-covered mountains.
After landing, receive a traditional welcome from your private Bhutanese expedition team and transfer to your accommodation.
The remainder of the day is deliberately gentle.
Take time to adjust to the elevation, walk through Paro and begin preparing equipment for the expedition ahead.
Your trekking team will review the journey, discuss high-altitude procedures and make final preparations for the weeks ahead.
Tonight is about arrival rather than adventure.
The mountains can wait.

Prayer flags move between blue pine trees while glimpses of the monastery appear across the valley as you gain elevation.
According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche reached this cliff on the back of a tigress and meditated within its caves during the eighth century.
Continue across the waterfall and climb the final stone steps toward the monastery complex.
Inside, incense, butter lamps and quiet prayer create an atmosphere far removed from the world below.
After descending, return to Paro for rest and final expedition preparation.
The hike also provides an important first opportunity to assess how your body responds to Bhutan’s mountain environment.

Settlements appear less frequently.
Forests become denser and the mountains begin to dominate every horizon.
Eventually, vehicle travel gives way to the trail.
From this point onward, the rhythm of the Snowman Trek is established by footsteps, camps, weather and elevation.
Leave Bumthang and travel toward the northern approach to the expedition route.
The journey passes through increasingly remote mountain landscapes, where traditional villages appear between long stretches of forest.
As the road climbs, prepare mentally for the transition ahead.
Your expedition crew will organize camping equipment, food supplies and pack animals while final route and weather information is reviewed.
Spend the night close to the beginning of the wilderness.

Continue climbing through high-altitude landscapes.
The air becomes thinner and the distances feel greater.
Glacial streams, scree slopes and broad Himalayan valleys replace the forested terrain encountered earlier in the trek.
Camp beneath the mountains and prepare for the first of the expedition’s major high crossings.

Lunana is among Bhutan’s most isolated inhabited regions—a landscape separated from the rest of the country by immense mountain barriers and long days of trekking.
Reaching it requires crossing some of the expedition’s highest passes.
Here, glaciers descend from the surrounding mountains, rivers begin beneath fields of ice and scattered communities occupy valleys that remain almost unimaginable from Bhutan’s western towns.
The Snowman Trek is at its most demanding here.
It is also at its most extraordinary.
Rise early for one of the expedition’s major crossings.
The trail climbs gradually toward snow-covered high country.
Each step requires patience as altitude slows the pace.
Prayer flags may eventually appear near the pass, marking a point where the horizon opens dramatically.
Look across ridges, glaciers and distant peaks before beginning the careful descent toward camp.

Begin another major mountain crossing.
The trail climbs through open terrain toward a high pass where prayer flags and mountain views reward the effort of the ascent.
Weather remains a constant presence.
Clouds can arrive quickly, snow may cover sections of the trail and the expedition team adjusts the pace according to conditions.
Descend toward a lower camp as the landscape begins its gradual transformation.

Arrive in Gasa.
After the immense distances and remote camps of the Snowman route, reaching a permanent settlement carries its own sense of achievement.
Take time to rest, recover and reflect on the mountain crossings now behind you.
Warm food, a more comfortable bed and the simple rhythms of settled life feel newly significant.

Leave Gasa and travel south toward Punakha.
Follow mountain roads beside rivers and forests as the landscape becomes progressively warmer and greener.
Arrive in the familiar surroundings of Punakha Valley.
After weeks of trekking, the sight of cultivated fields, roads and riverside settlements brings a profound sense of return.
Settle into comfortable accommodation and allow the body to rest.
