Before entering Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, the journey begins among the valleys that have shaped the kingdom’s religious and political history.
Thimphu introduces a capital where monasteries, prayer wheels and monumental Buddhist landmarks coexist with contemporary Bhutanese life. Beyond the city, the road climbs through forests toward Dochula Pass before descending into the warmer Punakha Valley.
Here, sacred rivers, cultivated fields and one of Bhutan’s greatest dzongs provide the cultural foundation for the journey toward Bumthang.
Few journeys begin as dramatically as the descent into Paro.
Himalayan peaks rise beyond the aircraft windows before the valley appears below—green, peaceful and enclosed by forest-covered mountains.

A mountain trail rises through fragrant blue pine forest toward Paro Taktsang—Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Prayer flags move between the trees while glimpses of the monastery appear through the forest as you climb.
Along the way, your private Bhutanese host will share the story of Guru Rinpoche, who according to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition reached this cliff on the back of a tigress and meditated within its caves during the eighth century.
