Into Bhutan’s Himalayan Frontier
Paro · Thimphu · Punakha · Gasa · Laya · Koina · Gasa Hot Springs
It is one of Bhutan’s great Himalayan journeys—a demanding passage through forests, alpine landscapes and high-altitude terrain toward Laya, homeland of the Layap people and one of the kingdom’s most distinctive mountain communities.
For generations, life in Laya has been shaped by altitude, yak herding, seasonal movement and the demands of the surrounding landscape. Traditional dress, local customs and village life remain closely connected to this environment, creating a cultural experience that feels inseparable from the mountains themselves.
This privately supported fourteen-day journey begins more gently in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha before turning north toward Gasa.
From there, the character of the journey changes.
Forests become denser, settlements fewer and the mountains increasingly dominant. Trails follow rivers through narrow valleys before climbing toward open highland country and the settlement of Laya.
Beyond the village, the trek continues through increasingly remote terrain toward Koina and higher mountain landscapes shaped by snow, glacial water and ancient movement across the Himalayas.
Eventually, the route descends toward Gasa, where forests return and the natural hot springs provide a welcome moment of recovery after days in the high country.
The final days return to Thimphu and Paro, allowing the scale of the wilderness journey to settle gradually into memory.

Paro introduces Bhutan through sacred temples and fortified architecture. Thimphu offers a glimpse of contemporary Bhutanese life, while Punakha reveals a warmer landscape of rivers, cultivated fields and one of the kingdom’s most magnificent dzongs. Beyond Punakha, the road turns north. Forests thicken. Settlements become smaller. Gasa appears at the threshold between Bhutan’s cultivated valleys and the mountain wilderness beyond.
Snow-covered peaks rise beyond the aircraft windows before the peaceful valley appears between forested mountains.
After landing, receive a traditional welcome from your private Bhutanese host and begin exploring Paro.
Visit Rinpung Dzong, the imposing fortress overlooking the valley. Walk through its courtyards and galleries while discovering the architectural and spiritual traditions that have shaped Bhutan’s great dzongs.
Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples.
Within its quiet courtyards, centuries of Buddhist devotion remain part of everyday life.
Later, continue toward Thimphu.
As evening settles over the capital, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese welcome dinner and meet members of the team who will support your journey into the northern mountains.
Tonight, the expedition still feels distant.
Soon, the road will turn toward the wilderness.

At approximately 3,100 metres, 108 white chortens rise beneath prayer flags and mountain sky.
On clear mornings, Himalayan peaks stretch across the distant horizon—mountains that will soon become the landscape of your journey.
Descend into Punakha Valley and visit Punakha Dzong, dramatically positioned at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
Walk through its monumental courtyards, sacred chambers and carved galleries before continuing north.
The road follows mountain rivers through increasingly remote terrain.
Traditional settlements appear less frequently.
Forest-covered slopes rise more steeply.
Eventually, arrive in the Gasa region, long regarded as a gateway to Bhutan’s northern highlands.
Settle into your accommodation and prepare for the transition from roads to trails.

Prayer flags and traditional shelters begin to appear as the route approaches one of Bhutan’s most distinctive highland settlements. Laya is more than a destination on the trek. It is a cultural threshold. Here, the Layap people have developed a way of life adapted to mountain weather, high-altitude agriculture and pastoral traditions that remain deeply rooted in the surrounding landscape.
As the day continues, the landscape grows increasingly dramatic.
Steep slopes rise above the trail while waterfalls descend from higher valleys.
The air becomes cooler as elevation increases.
Eventually, prayer flags and stone-and-timber houses signal the approach to Laya.
Enter the settlement and meet members of the Layap community.
Their distinctive clothing, pastoral traditions and mountain lifestyle reflect generations of adaptation to life at high altitude.
Settle into locally appropriate accommodation or expedition camp and spend the evening surrounded by one of Bhutan’s most remarkable highland landscapes.

Learn how yak herding, seasonal movement, traditional clothing and community customs remain closely connected to the mountain environment.
These encounters are most meaningful when they happen naturally.
A conversation beside a home.
Livestock moving through the village.
Families preparing for the day.
The mountains are never separate from daily life here.
They shape it.
Spend the afternoon resting, exploring or simply taking in the surrounding highland landscape.
Tomorrow, the journey continues beyond the village and into more isolated terrain.

The landscape changes gradually as the route moves between alpine terrain, river valleys and lower forests.
Look for signs of wildlife, seasonal grazing areas and the small details that reveal how both animals and people adapt to this environment.
There are few distractions here.
Only the trail.
The mountains.
And the rhythm of walking through a landscape that remains largely untouched by roads or large settlements.
Settle into another wilderness camp as the expedition begins its gradual return toward Gasa.

After days governed by altitude, trail conditions and wilderness camps, roads and towns can feel unexpectedly busy. Thimphu provides time to reconnect with Bhutan’s cultural life before the journey returns to Paro. These final days are intentionally gentler. They allow the experience of Laya, the high passes and the northern mountains to settle into memory before departure.
Follow mountain roads south through forests and river valleys.
Settlements grow larger as the route gradually reconnects with Bhutan’s more populated regions.
Arrive in the capital and settle into your carefully selected accommodation.
After days of camping and high-altitude trekking, simple comforts feel newly meaningful.
Spend the evening at a relaxed pace.
Warm food.
A comfortable room.
And time to look back on how far you have travelled.
