Unlike many of Bhutan’s better-known festivals held within ancient dzongs or monastery courtyards, this gathering takes place in a dramatic high-altitude landscape. Sacred masked dances, traditional music and ceremonial performances come together against a backdrop of forested mountains and distant snow-covered peaks.
The festival carries a strong sense of national remembrance and spiritual devotion, creating an experience in which Bhutan’s relationship with its history, monarchy, Buddhist traditions and Himalayan environment can be felt within a single extraordinary setting.
This privately curated seven-day journey combines the festival with some of Western Bhutan’s most evocative landscapes. Travel from the cultural heart of Thimphu into the fertile river valleys of Punakha, continue to the glacial landscapes of Phobjikha and return to Dochula for the festival itself.
The journey concludes in Paro, where the pilgrimage trail to Tiger’s Nest Monastery provides a final encounter with the sacred traditions that have accompanied you throughout Bhutan.

Thimphu offers an introduction to a capital shaped equally by Buddhist devotion and contemporary Bhutanese life. Beyond the city, the road rises through forests toward Dochula Pass before descending into Punakha, where sacred rivers, cultivated fields and one of Bhutan’s great fortresses define the landscape.
These first days establish the cultural and spiritual foundations for the festival journey ahead.
Your introduction begins at Buddha Dordenma, the immense golden Buddha seated high above the valley. From its elevated position, take in sweeping views across Thimphu and the surrounding mountains.
Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, where residents gather throughout the day to circumambulate the shrine, turn prayer wheels and offer quiet prayers.
Later, visit Tashichho Dzong, one of the capital’s most important architectural landmarks and a striking expression of Bhutan’s spiritual and administrative traditions.
As evening settles over Thimphu, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese welcome dinner introducing regional flavors, local customs and the hospitality that will accompany you throughout the journey.

At approximately 3,100 meters, 108 white chortens rise beneath prayer flags and forested slopes. On clear days, the distant Himalayan range appears beyond the pass, transforming the site into one of Bhutan’s most memorable mountain viewpoints.
You will return here later in the journey for the Druk Wangyel Tshechu. Today offers the opportunity to experience the pass in its quieter form before it becomes a gathering place for celebration.
Descend into the warmer Punakha Valley, where rice terraces, traditional houses and subtropical vegetation follow the river.
Visit Punakha Dzong, dramatically positioned at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. Walk through its monumental courtyards, sacred chambers and intricately carved galleries while discovering the royal and spiritual history associated with this remarkable fortress.
Later, continue through the countryside toward Chimi Lhakhang. Dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, the unconventional Buddhist teacher remembered as the Divine Madman, the temple remains an important place of pilgrimage and blessing.
Spend the evening surrounded by the rivers and forested hills of Punakha.
Beyond Punakha, the road turns toward one of Bhutan’s most peaceful landscapes.
Phobjikha is a broad glacial valley surrounded by forested mountains and scattered villages. Its open meadows, traditional farms and wetlands create a landscape where rural life and conservation remain closely connected.
During the colder months, the valley is also associated with the arrival of black-necked cranes, adding another dimension to a place already defined by stillness and natural beauty.
Eventually, the broad glacial landscape of Phobjikha opens before you.
Visit Gangtey Monastery, positioned above the valley and closely connected with the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. From its elevated setting, look across the surrounding fields, forests and scattered settlements.
Spend time exploring the monastery and learning about its spiritual relationship with the communities of the valley.
Later, descend into Phobjikha itself and experience the quieter rhythm of rural Bhutan.
Walk through village landscapes, farmland and open meadows while observing a way of life shaped by agriculture, community and the surrounding environment.
As daylight fades across the valley, settle into your carefully selected accommodation and enjoy the extraordinary stillness of one of Bhutan’s most distinctive landscapes.
Visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to learn more about the migratory birds associated with the valley and the conservation initiatives developed to protect their habitat.
Subject to the season and natural migration patterns, there may also be opportunities to observe cranes within the wider valley landscape.
Continue on foot through traditional villages, farmland and meadow trails, experiencing the close relationship between Phobjikha’s communities and their natural surroundings.
This is a morning designed to move slowly.
Listen to the sounds of the valley, watch farmers moving between fields and take in the forests rising beyond the open plains.
Later, leave Phobjikha and begin the journey back toward Punakha.
The road crosses forested mountain landscapes before descending once again into the warmer valley.
Return to your accommodation for a relaxed evening before tomorrow’s journey back into the high mountains for the festival.

The final chapter of the journey returns to Paro.
Here, traditional houses, ancient temples and fortified monasteries occupy a broad valley surrounded by forested mountains.
Above them all stands Paro Taktsang—Tiger’s Nest Monastery—one of Bhutan’s most recognizable spiritual landmarks and the destination of a pilgrimage trail climbing through the forest.
After the high-altitude celebration at Dochula, the journey concludes with a quieter form of devotion.
As you approach, Tiger’s Nest emerges fully against the mountainside, appearing almost suspended from the cliff.
Cross the waterfall and climb the final stone steps before entering its sacred chambers, where incense, butter lamps and quiet prayer create an atmosphere far removed from the valley below.
After descending, continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples.
Later, visit Paro Rinpung Dzong, an imposing fortress overlooking the valley and a remarkable expression of Bhutanese architecture, history and spiritual heritage.
Your final evening concludes with a traditional Bhutanese dining experience celebrating local flavors, generous hospitality and the journey you have shared across the kingdom.
