Druk Path Himalaya Passage

A Sacred Crossing Through Bhutan’s Ancient Mountain Trails

Paro · Jele Dzong · Jangchulakha · Jimilang Tsho · Simkotra Tsho · Phajoding · Thimphu

Druk Path Himalaya Passage

The trail climbs toward Jele Dzong before continuing across high ridges where forests gradually open into alpine landscapes. Prayer flags appear along mountain paths, yak herds graze across remote meadows and, when the skies are clear, snow-covered Himalayan peaks rise along the distant horizon.

Deeper into the journey lie Jimilang Tsho and Simkotra Tsho, mountain lakes surrounded by open high country and extraordinary silence.

Here, nights are spent beneath the stars and days begin beside still water reflecting the surrounding ridges.

The final crossing rises toward Phume La Pass before descending past Phajoding toward Thimphu. After days governed by footsteps, weather and mountain light, the capital gradually appears far below—bringing an ancient Himalayan passage to its natural conclusion.

This privately supported seven-day journey is ideal for travelers seeking a genuine wilderness experience without committing to one of Bhutan’s longer expeditions.

Paro and the Ancient Trail

The journey begins in Paro, where traditional houses, temples and fortified monasteries occupy a broad valley beneath forested mountains.

The first day provides time to understand Bhutan’s spiritual world before the trail begins climbing away from the valley.

By the following evening, roads and settlements will already feel distant.

Jele Dzong marks the first threshold between cultural Bhutan and the mountain wilderness ahead.

Days 1–2

Day 1

“Arrival Into the Kingdom of Bhutan”

Visit Rinpung Dzong, the imposing fortress overlooking the valley. Walk through its courtyards and galleries while discovering the architectural and spiritual traditions that have shaped Bhutan’s great dzongs.

Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples. Within its peaceful courtyards, prayer wheels and daily rituals offer an intimate introduction to the living Buddhist traditions of the kingdom.

Later, meet the trekking specialists who will accompany you into the mountains.

Your expedition briefing covers equipment, camping arrangements, trail conditions, altitude awareness and the journey ahead.

As evening settles over Paro, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese welcome dinner.

Tomorrow, the road gives way to an ancient mountain trail.

Day 2

“The Ancient Trail Begins”

As elevation increases, openings between the trees reveal Paro far below.

The sounds of roads disappear.

Mountain wind, birdsong and the rhythm of footsteps begin to define the day.

Continue toward Jele Dzong, standing high above the surrounding landscape at approximately 3,480 metres.

This historic mountain fortress marks the first campsite of your Himalayan crossing.

On clear afternoons, distant Himalayan peaks—including Jomolhari—may appear along the horizon.

Settle into camp as your trekking team prepares dinner.

When evening light reaches the mountains, Paro feels very far away.

Jangchulakha and Jimilang Tsho

Yak herders have long used these landscapes, and their animals can still be encountered grazing across remote pastures.

Then the mountains reveal something different.

Hidden among the ridges are high-altitude lakes whose still waters and isolated settings give the Druk Path some of its most memorable landscapes.

Days 3-6

Day 3

“Across the Highland Wilderness”

The route moves through forests of juniper, fir and rhododendron before climbing toward increasingly open high country.

Prayer flags appear at elevated points along the trail, moving constantly in the mountain wind.

As the forest thins, views begin to open across valleys and distant Himalayan ridges.

Pass alpine meadows where yaks graze during the warmer months, offering glimpses of the pastoral traditions associated with Bhutan’s highlands.

The trail rises and falls across mountain terrain before approaching Jangchulakha at approximately 3,780 metres.

Day 4

“Lakes Beneath the Himalayan Sky”

Today brings one of the most beautiful transitions of the Druk Path.

Leave Jangchulakha and follow the trail through high ridges and alpine terrain.

The landscape becomes increasingly open as forests recede and broad mountain views appear around you.

Continue toward Jimilang Tsho, a high-altitude lake resting quietly among the mountains.

The lake and surrounding landscape carry cultural and spiritual associations for local communities, adding another dimension to its natural beauty.

Arrive beside the water at approximately 3,880 metres and settle into camp.

Spend the afternoon walking around the surrounding landscape or simply remaining beside the lake as clouds move across the mountains.

As daylight fades, the water darkens and the surrounding ridges fall into shadow.

There are no roads here.

No city lights.

Only the lake, the mountains and the extraordinary silence of Bhutan’s highlands.

Day 5

“The High Mountain Passage”

The trail climbs through increasingly high terrain, moving between mountain ridges and remote valleys where vegetation becomes sparse.

Each ascent reveals another perspective.

On clear days, distant snow-covered summits appear across the horizon while deep valleys fall away beneath the trail.

Continue toward Simkotra Tsho, another high-altitude lake set among Bhutan’s mountain landscapes.

Arrive at the camp area and allow the pace of the day to slow.

Walk beside the lake.

Watch prayer flags move against the sky.

Follow the changing light across the surrounding ridges.

Tonight is your final wilderness camp.

As darkness settles over the highlands, stars begin to appear above the lake and the mountains become silhouettes against the night sky.

Tomorrow, you cross the highest point of the journey.

Phajoding and Thimphu

The final stage of the Druk Path begins high above Bhutan’s capital.

Before descending, the trail climbs toward Phume La Pass, the highest point of the journey.

From here, weather permitting, the mountain world through which you have travelled opens behind you while Thimphu Valley lies somewhere below.

The descent leads toward Phajoding, where monasteries and prayer flags signal the return of Bhutan’s inhabited valleys.

It is a fitting transition.

The journey begins with a monastery above Paro and leaves the wilderness through another sacred landscape above Thimphu.

Days 6-7

Day 6

“The Final Himalayan Crossing”

When conditions are clear, expansive Himalayan views stretch across the horizon.

Pause at the pass.

Behind you lie the lakes, forests and ridges crossed over the previous days.

Ahead lies the long descent toward Bhutan’s capital.

Follow the trail downward toward Phajoding, an important monastic area positioned high above Thimphu Valley.

After days of wilderness, the appearance of monastery buildings and prayer flags creates a powerful sense of return.

Continue descending through forest.

Gradually, Thimphu appears below.

Roads return.

Buildings become visible.

The sounds of the city replace mountain wind.

Meet your vehicle at the end of the trail and transfer to your carefully selected accommodation.

Tonight, enjoy a warm dinner, a comfortable room and the simple satisfaction of having crossed the mountains between two of Bhutan’s great valleys on foot.

Day 7

“A Farewell Beyond the Mountains”

Visit Buddha Dordenma, seated high above Thimphu Valley. From its elevated position, look toward the mountains that formed the final horizon of your trek.

Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, where residents gather throughout the morning to circumambulate the shrine, turn prayer wheels and offer quiet prayers.

Take time to experience Thimphu’s distinctive balance between Buddhist tradition and contemporary Bhutanese life before beginning the journey back toward Paro.

Your private transfer will take you to Paro International Airport for your departing flight.

As the aircraft rises above the kingdom, the mountain ridges of the Druk Path disappear beneath you.

Somewhere among them lie Jele Dzong, yak pastures, silent lakes and camps beneath the Himalayan sky.

The ancient trail has brought you from one valley to another.

What you discovered between them travels home with you.
