Dagana to Thimphu via Dagala Trek

A Quiet Himalayan Crossing Through Bhutan’s Hidden Highlands

Dagana to Thimphu via Dagala Trek

Beginning in Bhutan’s southern interior, the journey moves gradually from cultivated valleys and forested hills into increasingly remote mountain country. Villages become fewer, trails climb higher and the landscape opens into broad alpine meadows where yak herders have moved through the mountains for generations.

At the heart of the trek lies the Dagala region, known for its high-altitude lakes and sweeping Himalayan viewpoints.

Here, camps are surrounded by open sky, prayer flags appear beside mountain trails and still lakes rest beneath ridgelines rising above 4,000 metres.

Unlike busier Himalayan routes, the experience is defined as much by solitude as by scenery.

Long stretches of trail pass through landscapes shaped by weather, grazing animals and seasonal movement rather than roads or permanent settlements.

This privately supported nine-day journey begins with an introduction to Thimphu before travelling south toward Dagana. From there, the trek crosses the highlands of Dagala before descending naturally toward Bhutan’s capital.

The journey finishes where wilderness and cultural life meet again—making the route not simply a trek through the mountains, but a true passage between two very different sides of Bhutan.

Thimphu and the Road to Dagana

During Paro Tsechu, the courtyards of the historic Rinpung Dzong become the setting for masked cham dances, Buddhist rituals and joyful celebrations. Monks move beneath vibrant costumes. Drums and ceremonial horns echo through the valley. Families arrive dressed in their finest traditional attire, gathering to receive blessings and renew their connection with faith and community.

Days 1–2

Day 1

“Arrival Into the Land of the Thunder Dragon”

After landing, receive a traditional welcome from your private Bhutanese host and begin the scenic journey toward Thimphu.

Your introduction to the capital begins at Buddha Dordenma, the immense golden figure seated high above the valley.

From its elevated position, take in wide views across Thimphu and the surrounding mountains.

Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, where residents gather throughout the day to walk in quiet circumambulation, turn prayer wheels and offer prayers.

Later, meet the trekking specialists who will accompany you into the Dagala highlands.

Your expedition briefing covers equipment, daily trekking routines, altitude awareness and the route ahead.

As evening settles over the capital, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese welcome dinner.

Tomorrow, the journey leaves the familiar valleys behind.

Day 2

“Into Bhutan’s Hidden Southern Valleys”

The road moves through a succession of changing landscapes, descending from mountain forests into quieter valleys where traditional villages and agricultural communities appear along the route.

As the journey continues south, Bhutan feels increasingly removed from the better-known western travel circuit.

Arrive in Dagana and spend time discovering the atmosphere of this lesser-visited region.

Farming landscapes, traditional settlements and surrounding forests offer a different introduction to Bhutanese rural life.

Later, meet with your trekking team to complete final preparations.

Equipment is checked.

Camping supplies are organized.

The route and weather are reviewed.

Tonight marks the final evening before the journey continues entirely on foot.

From Dagana Into the Highlands

At first, the trail moves through forests and cultivated areas. Then permanent settlements begin to disappear. The path climbs higher, air becomes cooler and the mountains begin to open around you. By the time the trail enters the Dagala region, the quieter rhythm of expedition life has fully taken over.

Days 4-7

Day 4

“The First Steps Into the Wilderness”

Leave Dagana and follow traditional mountain paths through forested landscapes and scattered settlements. The trail climbs steadily, revealing occasional views across the valleys below.

As the day progresses, cultivated land gradually gives way to wilder terrain. Forests become denser. Villages grow less frequent. The sounds of roads and vehicles disappear behind you. Your trekking crew moves ahead with camping equipment and supplies while the pace settles into the rhythm that will define the next several days. Walk. Rest. Climb.

And continue. Reach your first wilderness camp later in the day. As darkness settles over the mountains, the journey begins to feel very different from the Bhutan you left that morning.

Day 5-7

“Descending Toward the Valley of Thimphu”

Follow the trail downward through changing vegetation as open alpine terrain gradually gives way to forest.

With each hour, the landscape becomes greener.

The air warms.

Signs of settlement begin to return.

Eventually, the valley opens below and Thimphu appears in the distance.

After days spent among high lakes and empty mountain ridges, the sight of the capital carries an unexpected sense of arrival.

Continue descending to the trailhead, where your private vehicle waits.

Transfer into Thimphu and settle into your carefully selected accommodation.

A warm meal, comfortable room and long evening of rest mark the completion of your Himalayan crossing.

Thimphu and the Return to Paro

Alpine terrain gives way to forest. Trails become gentler. Villages and cultivated landscapes slowly reappear. Eventually, Thimphu Valley comes into view below. After days spent in remote mountain country, returning to Bhutan’s capital provides a striking contrast—and a natural conclusion to a trek that has connected two very different regions of the kingdom.

Days 8-9

Day 8-9

“Farewell to the Himalayan Kingdom”

Take time to reflect on the experiences that have shaped the journey: the quiet road toward Dagana, the first forest trails, yak pastures in the highlands, still mountain lakes and long ridges suspended above the clouds.

Your private transfer will take you to Paro International Airport for your departing flight.

As the aircraft rises above Bhutan, the landscape begins to rearrange itself beneath you.

Valleys become smaller.

Mountain ridges become lines.

Somewhere beyond them lies Dagala—silent, remote and far from the routes most travelers know.

The trail has connected Dagana with Thimphu.

What lies between them is what you will remember.
