Bumdra Trek

A Himalayan Journey Above the Clouds

Paro · Sang Choekhor · Bumdra Camp · Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Bumdra Trek

The Bumdra Trek is often associated with the idea of a “Trek of a Thousand Prayers,” a fitting description for a route that moves through forests, sacred mountain spaces and high alpine meadows where prayer flags and distant monasteries appear against the Himalayan sky.

Unlike Bhutan’s longer expeditions, Bumdra offers a genuine sense of wilderness within only a few days. The journey begins among Paro’s temples and fortified architecture before climbing away from the valley through blue pine and rhododendron forest.

As elevation increases, the landscape opens dramatically.

Forested slopes give way to alpine meadows, prayer flags move in the mountain wind and the noise of everyday life disappears beneath wide Himalayan skies.

At Bumdra Camp, the journey reaches its defining setting.

Here, high above Paro, travelers spend the night beneath the stars with mountain ridges and snow-covered peaks stretching across the horizon.

The following days unfold through high-country exploration before the trail descends toward Paro Taktsang—Tiger’s Nest Monastery—allowing the trek to conclude not simply with a return to the valley, but with one of Bhutan’s most important spiritual encounters.

Paro

The journey begins in Paro, one of Bhutan’s most evocative valleys.

Traditional houses, ancient temples and fortified monasteries occupy a landscape surrounded by forested mountains.

Before the trek moves into the highlands, Paro offers time to understand the spiritual world that will accompany the journey above the valley.

Days 1

Day 1

“Arrival Into Bhutan’s Spiritual Valley”

Mountain peaks rise beyond the aircraft windows before the valley appears below, framed by forests, traditional settlements and cultivated fields.

After landing, receive a traditional welcome from your private Bhutanese host and transfer into Paro.

Begin your exploration at Rinpung Dzong, the imposing fortress overlooking the valley. Walk through its courtyards and galleries while discovering the architectural traditions that have shaped Bhutan’s fortified monasteries.

Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples. Within its peaceful courtyards, centuries of devotion remain part of everyday life.

Later, return to your accommodation and meet the trekking specialists who will accompany you into the mountains.

Your briefing covers the route, trail conditions, equipment and the camping experience ahead.

As evening settles over Paro, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese welcome dinner.

Tomorrow, the trail rises above the valley.

Bumdra and the High Himalayas

From the trailhead near Sang Choekhor, forest paths begin climbing through blue pine and rhododendron before the landscape gradually opens into higher alpine country.

Below, Paro becomes increasingly distant.

Ahead, open ridges and mountain meadows lead toward Bumdra Camp—a place where the experience of altitude is defined as much by silence and sky as by elevation.

Days 2-3

Day 2

“The Trail Above the Valley”

Leave Paro and travel toward Sang Choekhor, where the trekking journey begins.

Meet your expedition crew and begin climbing through forest.

The trail rises steadily beneath blue pine and rhododendron, occasionally opening toward views of the valley far below.

As you move higher, the sounds of roads and settlements gradually disappear.

Prayer flags begin to appear along the route, marking sacred places and mountain viewpoints.

The forest eventually gives way to more open terrain.

Alpine meadows spread across the slopes while the Himalayan horizon begins to reveal itself beyond the ridges.

Continue toward Bumdra Camp, positioned high above Paro at approximately 4,000 metres.

Settle into camp while your trekking team prepares a warm meal and the afternoon light moves across the mountains.
