At Jangothang, the expedition reaches its defining landscape.
Here, beneath Jomolhari and neighboring Himalayan peaks, days are spent walking through high-altitude valleys, observing pastoral life and experiencing the immense stillness of Bhutan’s mountain frontier.
The journey eventually descends through forests and river valleys before returning to the cultural landscapes of Thimphu and Punakha.
It is a trek shaped equally by physical movement and quiet observation—a journey into a Himalayan environment where sacred belief, wilderness and everyday mountain life remain deeply connected.

Before the trail enters Bhutan’s high Himalayan wilderness, the journey begins in Paro.
This peaceful valley provides more than an introduction to the kingdom. It offers time to prepare physically, understand the spiritual traditions associated with the mountains and experience one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage sites.
The defining moment comes on the forest trail to Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
From there, the journey turns toward Shana and the beginning of the Jomolhari trail.
Himalayan peaks rise beyond the aircraft windows before the valley appears between forest-covered mountains.
After landing, receive a traditional welcome from your private Bhutanese expedition host and transfer into Paro.
Begin your introduction to the kingdom at Rinpung Dzong, the imposing fortress overlooking the valley. Walk through its courtyards and galleries while discovering the architectural and spiritual traditions that have shaped Bhutan’s fortified monasteries.
Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples. Within its peaceful courtyards, prayer wheels continue turning as they have for generations.
Later, return to your accommodation and meet the trekking specialists who will accompany you into the mountains.

As you ascend, your Bhutanese host will share the story of Guru Rinpoche, who according to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition reached this cliff on the back of a tigress and meditated within its caves.
Eventually, the monastery appears across the mountainside, seemingly suspended against the rock.
Cross the waterfall and climb the final stone steps before entering its sacred chambers, where incense, butter lamps and quiet prayer create an atmosphere far removed from the valley below.
After descending, continue toward Shana.
Traditional settlements and cultivated landscapes gradually give way to a quieter mountain environment as you approach the beginning of the Jomolhari trail.
Meet your expedition crew, complete the final trekking preparations and settle in for the evening.
Beyond Shana, the road will disappear.

The trek begins by following the Paro Chhu toward Bhutan’s western frontier. At first, the trail moves through forests and river valleys. Then the landscape begins to open. Trees thin, grazing areas appear and snow-covered mountains begin to rise above the horizon. By the time you reach Jangothang, Jomolhari is no longer a distant peak. It becomes the defining presence of the journey.
Today, the expedition begins in earnest.
Leave Shana and follow the Paro Chhu upstream into increasingly remote country.
The trail passes through forests of pine, oak and rhododendron, crossing mountain streams and moving between steep valley walls.
The sound of the river accompanies much of the day.
Occasional grazing areas and traditional shelters provide reminders that these landscapes have long formed part of local pastoral routes.
As the hours pass, roads and permanent settlements disappear behind you.
The pace settles into the rhythm that will define the trek: walking, resting, listening to the mountains and moving steadily toward higher country.
Arrive at the Soi Thangkha area and settle into your wilderness camp.
As darkness falls, the first true silence of the expedition begins.

The forest gradually gives way to alpine vegetation and more open mountain terrain.
Rivers wind through broadening valleys while distant snow peaks begin to dominate the skyline.
The higher you climb, the more dramatic the landscape becomes.
Yak pastures appear across the slopes and traditional highland settlements provide glimpses of communities whose lives remain closely connected with livestock and seasonal mountain movement.
Then, somewhere along the trail, Jomolhari reveals itself.
Its immense snow-covered summit rises above the valley, marking your approach to Jangothang.
Arrive at the base-camp region and settle beneath one of Bhutan’s most celebrated Himalayan peaks.
For the first time, the mountain you have travelled toward stands directly above you.

Today is deliberately slower, providing important acclimatization while allowing time to explore the landscapes surrounding Jangothang.
Follow nearby trails toward alpine viewpoints, glacial landscapes and yak-grazing areas.
Depending on conditions and the chosen route, walk toward higher ground for broader views across Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and the surrounding Himalayan ridges.
Spend time observing the rhythm of highland life.
Yak herders move between seasonal pastures while prayer flags, stone walls and isolated homes reveal a human presence adapted to an environment that can appear almost impossibly vast.
Return to camp with the afternoon free for rest, photography and acclimatization.
Tonight, there is nowhere to rush.
The mountain is the destination.

Beyond the base-camp region, the trail enters higher and more exposed landscapes. The terrain becomes increasingly alpine. Glacial valleys, mountain lakes and high ridges replace the deeper forests of the lower trail. These are days designed not simply to cover distance, but to experience the scale and solitude of Bhutan’s Himalayan environment.
Leave Jangothang and continue into higher country.
The trail follows routes shaped by generations of mountain movement, crossing broad alpine valleys and climbing through increasingly exposed terrain.
Glacial streams cut through the landscape while distant ridges frame the horizon.
Depending on the final expedition route, pass near mountain lakes and elevated viewpoints where the surrounding peaks appear with extraordinary clarity.
This is also a landscape shaped by pastoral life.
Yak herders continue to move through these valleys, adapting their daily routines to weather, altitude and seasonal grazing conditions.
Your Bhutanese trekking team will help interpret the human stories behind the wilderness, revealing how communities have lived within these mountains long before trekking routes appeared on maps.
Reach camp in the highlands and watch evening light move slowly across the surrounding slopes.

Today is devoted to the wider mountain landscape.
There is no single monument or fortress to reach.
Instead, the experience lies in the wilderness itself.
Walk through high-altitude valleys where clouds move quickly across the peaks and mountain winds carry little sound beyond the movement of prayer flags and distant livestock.
Use the day for exploration, photography and quiet observation.
Your route may follow ridgelines, lakes or elevated valleys according to weather, trail conditions and the acclimatization of the group.
Far from roads and modern distractions, the environment begins to redefine what luxury can mean.
Space.
Silence.
Clean air.
And the rare privilege of having an immense Himalayan landscape almost entirely to yourself.
Return to camp for another evening beneath the mountains.

Your final morning unfolds amid the tranquility of Paro.
Your private transfer will take you to Paro International Airport for your departing flight.
As the aircraft rises above the valley and the Himalayan ranges return to view, leave Bhutan carrying memories of sacred temples, high mountain camps, yak pastures, alpine valleys and the immense white summit that defined the journey.
Jomolhari disappears beyond the clouds.
Its presence does not.
